Site Update: Donations and Online Store

New Logo MM.png

At the request of a few people (after I suggested the possibility) I’ve made a small change and will be making a more major change down the road (but have begun work on it). I appreciate everyone’s feedback and especially the support following the 2 year anniversary of this site. Thank you!

Donations

First up is the minor change. I’ve added a PayPal donate button for the blog. As of now I’ve hidden the button on the About section and my reasoning for doing so that it isn’t too pushy and that the yellow PayPal button is a little ugly and eye-catching/distracting. I’ll eventually make a custom button image for button and I might move the donation button to a more prominent position (but not in a way that detracts from the site’s look or is too explicit). I, of course, don’t expect anything but if you do donate anything you have my sincere gratitude!

I’m still considering patreon but I don’t expect to do anything with this in the short to medium term.

Shop

You can see up in the navigation menu that there is a new item “Store (soon)” (currently password protected). On this store I am going to start selling limited bundles of ink samples from inks I review. This bundle will include the reviewed ink, three inks that were compared to it in the review, and a mystery ink from my collection. Five samples in total at 2ml each. I’m still looking at pricing but the pricing will likely be dependent on which inks are in the bundle. I think this will be interesting because there are some inks (such as Sailor Store Exclusives in Japan) that people can’t easily get samples of otherwise. For right now there are no plans to sell anything else than the bundles but who knows, that might change. If I sell pens I might put them up there as well.

Next month is still going to have some reviews in it but as I am traveling to Japan for a couple of weeks I’m going to be writing about my experiences there, relative to Fountain Pens and stationary. I’m pretty excited!

What this means

For me this is not a money grabbing exercise. I wouldn’t mind it if the blog was able to pay for it’s own hosting (that’d be amazing!) but the main reason for this is to solidify the future and reiterate commitment to this site for the long term. For readers and for myself. There’s more of an incentive and a motivation to continue, not just in terms of any money that I might receive but because if people have donated then I now owe it to them to continue. It also frames the blog, for me personally, as something I’m serious about and reinforces my commitment (regardless of if I receive any donations!). I don’t want to burn out (which I’m very aware of as a risk) so I don’t think I’ll increase the output but I will keep it consistent at 2-3 publications a month.

This will be the last meta post for a while. You don’t read this blog for this sort of stuff!

Thank you again to everyone! Not just readers but also to those in the community that promote the works of smaller blogs. You’re work is definitely appreciated!

I love the idea of buying ink samples, especially rare ones from Japan. Have you considered how much you’re thinking of charging for shipping? I live in the US, so really expensive shipping could be a big deterrent for me buying ink samples from you.

    1. That is something I’m trying to be mindful of. I’m bound by the minimum of Australia post but I’ll be looking into whether I could send the vials in a "letter" rather than a parcel. That might mean sending them in 2ml vials rather than 5ml vials (still with 2mls of ink) which are less practical.

Shipping for a parcel would be AU$15.85 (US$11.73) which isn’t extreme from an Australian perspective (though it is still prohibitive) but from a US perspective that might be quite high. Shipping a letter would range from AU$3 (US$2.22) if under 50g in weight or up to AU$9 (US$6.66) if it goes over that weight. I still need to test these things out in terms of weight and vial size. I’d need to wrap the inks in zip bag as well in case of leakage and 50g doesn’t give you much breathing room with weight!

I’ll be trying all this out once I get back from Japan though!

Thanks for getting back to me quickly. I’m really excited at the possibility. For instance, earlier today I was drooling over the Ink Institute Cut Jade review you posted. As per shipping, I think most Americans are pretty spoiled b/c of Amazon Prime and how close we are to things. Looking into letters is a great idea. $3-$9 USD is fairly reasonable, especially if more than one set of samples could be fit into a package. $11 for a single set of samples seems like it would be a lot, at least for me.

Also, super jealous you’re in Japan. I’d love to visit Japan one day.

    1. Ha! Yes I little spoilt :p plus you guys tend to not have to order internationally as often as Australia I’d wager. I do understand though.

From some home tests a small vial with 2ml of ink + a plastic zip bag would weigh 4.42grams (let’s round to 5g) the envelops is 5-10 grams depending on whether I get it padded or not. Worst case scenario that’s 35g for five ink samples in an envelope which is below the 50g maximum for the $3 letter so it might be possible!

Don’t read the blog for the next month! going to have lots of Japan photos! haha

Yeah, you’re absolutely right about that. I can count on one finger the number of times I’ve ordered internationally in the past year. That one order was a Sailor Profit Slim 21K M nib because Sailor and Pilot’s pricing in the US is completely nonsensical. I think, if possible, staying below $3-$6 USD would be ideal. That’s what I pay when buying from companies like Goulet.

Even though I’m super jealous, I’m still looking forward to seeing all your amazing pictures.

  4. I want to know what happened to the Cocktail inks that were on the Itoya website a few years ago? Can you find out? We’re they related to the Cocktail inks in Paris?

    1. I think they were ink mixing inks where people at Itoya mixed the inks for you? I think that was called cocktail inks and I think they used J.Herbin inks so quite possibly similar to something in Paris. Not 100% though!
